RIVER ISLAND: BRIDGING PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL RETAIL WITH COMPOSABLE COMMERCE

ABOUT RIVER ISLAND

With a rich history dating back to 1948, River Island has become synonymous with trendy designs and contemporary fashion. The brand's collections feature a diverse range of clothing, including chic dresses, tailored suits, casual denim, and fashionable accessories. River Island is known for its ability to capture the latest trends and translate them into accessible and wearable pieces, ensuring that customers can effortlessly express their personal style. With its combination of quality craftsmanship, fashion-forward aesthetics, and accessible price points, River Island continues to be a go-to destination for fashion-conscious individuals seeking on-trend and affordable attire.

THE CHALLENGE

River Island continually strives to enrich the retail experience for its customers. With a vision to innovate beyond just their clothing lines, River Island aimed to pilot a self-serve checkout experience. Drawing from the composable commerce architecture previously built in collaboration with Cabiri, they now sought to meld this framework with Mercaux's POS platform.

River Island's ambition was matched with a challenging timeframe. The approaching Black Friday and festive season added pressure, setting the clock ticking with a tight six-week window to get the new system up and running. This was not just a technological challenge, but one that also encompassed staff training and readiness. For the Cabiri team, it was an opportunity to flex their expertise.

THE SOLUTION

Remarkably, even before the B2C checkout was made available to online customers and was still in its testing phase, Cabiri managed to get the in-store pilot live. Such agility highlighted the benefits of the composable commerce platform's adaptability and efficiency.

The new in-store process was streamlined for customers: a simple drop of River Island products into an RFID bucket reader, and their selected items would seamlessly appear as a digital basket on the Mercaux’s Self Checkout Kiosk. The foundational work done by Cabiri made this integration almost effortless, capitalising on existing partnerships with platforms like Talon, Stripe, and commercetools to ensure a unified and smooth customer experience. With the new system, River Island not only gained flexibility in offering promotions but also benefited from enriched data insights into customer behaviour.

Cabiri was the driving force behind our tech vision of moving to a MACH architecture. They were collaborative and worked with us through every stage of the project, partnering to make decisions that fit in with our roadmap and the ecosystem. It was quick and easy to leverage and extended our new commerce platform for self-serve POS in just 6 weeks.

THE FUTURE

Having tested the waters with the Bluewater store pilot, River Island is now assessing its success and potential for a broader rollout across the country. While the composable commerce platform ensures technical readiness, the focus shifts to logistical aspects, such as store fit-outs and onsite network optimisation. As they forge ahead, River Island is set to continuously refine its digital landscape, tapping into the platform's potential for swift and intuitive feature integrations.
